Product Description

IRLZ44N NChannel LogicLevel Power MOSFET

High-Current 55V MOSFET for Switching Applications

The IRLZ44N is a popular Nchannel Power MOSFET designed for highcurrent switching applications. Its logic-level gate drive allows direct control from microcontrollers like Arduino, making it a favorite for DIY and professional projects [citation:1].

LogicLevel Compatible Directly driven by 3.3V or 5V logic circuits [citation:1]
High Current Capability - Handles up to 47A continuous current [citation:1][citation:4]
Maximum Drain-Source Voltage (Vdss) is 55V [citation:1]
Keep gatesource voltage (Vgs) between 20V and +20V for safe operation
Use a gate resistor and pulldown to prevent accidental turnon

Connection Guide

Pinout (TO-220 package, face up):

  • Pin 1 (Gate): Control signal (logic-level voltage)
  • Pin 2 (Drain): Main current path (connect to load)
  • Pin 3 (Source): Current return path and common ground
In a typical high-side switch, the load connects between the positive supply and the Drain.
For microcontrollers, a 100Ω to 330Ω gate resistor is recommended to reduce ringing.
The TO-220 metal tab is internally connected to the Drain (pin 2). Ensure proper insulation if mounting to a grounded heatsink.

Troubleshooting

MOSFET not switching on:

  • Check Gate voltage is above 2V (ensure at least 4.5V for full conduction)
  • Verify Gate is not left floating (use a 10kΩ pull-down resistor)
  • Ensure Source and Microcontroller ground are common

Excessive heating:

  • Reduce switching frequency
  • Ensure Gate voltage is high enough (5V or 10V) to achieve the 22mΩ on-resistance [citation:3]
  • Check for insufficient heatsinking
