Power Requirements

The MG996R requires substantial power:

  • Running current: 500mA to 900mA at 6V
  • Stall current: 2.5A at 6V
  • Use a separate external power supply for stable operation
For Arduino projects, use a 5V 3A external adapter or battery pack
Add a capacitor (100µF or larger) near the servo to smooth power delivery
Insufficient power may cause servo twitching, stalling, or Arduino resets

Troubleshooting

Servo not moving:

  • Check power supply provides at least 2.5A peak current
  • Verify PWM signal connection (usually yellow/white wire)
  • Avoid using Arduino 5V pin for power

Jittery or erratic movement:

  • Add a large capacitor to the power supply lines
  • Ensure stable voltage supply
  • Check for loose wiring connections

Overheating or stalling:

  • Reduce mechanical load on the servo
  • Verify operating voltage does not exceed 7.2V
  • Allow cooling between heavy usage cycles
